Many of Dobbs Perterbilt’s senior level employees work offline when traveling. They're on the road often, and there's a risk of exposing sensitive information if their computers fall into the wrong hands.
To safeguard against this, the IT team was looking for a multi-factor authentication (MFA) solution to enhance security no matter where employees log on.
Although MFA wasn't mandated by a compliance requirement at the time, their auditors wanted to see MFA in place for senior employees and for all IT personnel.
The IT team had previously implemented Duo, but they viewed the solution as easy to override. Plus, it was expensive. Michael Commons, system administrator at Dobbs Peterbilt, started looking for a more affordable solution that could be easily deployed and that would offer MFA even when the user is offline.
After researching the options available, Commons only evaluated UserLock as a Duo alternative. After having a look at the features and cost, he quickly realized UserLock was perfect for his needs.

UserLock's offline MFA capabilities was the main game changer. The fact that no internet connection is needed for UserLock MFA to work was a really big plus for the IT team.
Since UserLock is hosted right alongside on premise Active Directory, the agent-based software is deployed directly onto protected machines. This allows UserLock to maintain MFA and access controls across any login conditions, no matter where users are connecting from and without the need for an internet connection.
UserLock also maintains access controls when users aren't connected to the LAN. When Dobbs Peterbilt employees logon to a protected machine that's outside of the company network, UserLock can challenge any remote desktop (RDP) or virtual private network (VPN) connection for a second factor of authentication.
On the users’ side, the authenticator application doesn’t require any internet or mobile connection to verify the challenge.
According to Commons, the initial setup for MFA was straightforward.
Now, UserLock MFA enhances security for Dobbs Peterbilt's senior employees and IT staff. It allows them to satisfy their auditors and prepares them well for increasingly strict compliance requirements.
The offline MFA feature also gives the IT team peace of mind in case a sensitive laptop is stolen or lost.
