# License FAQ

Answers to common questions about FileAudit licensing, how users and servers are counted, upgrades, and registering your serial.

## How many FileAudit licenses do I need?

Each FileAudit subscription allows you to audit a set number of servers and users:

- **Servers** are the systems hosting the files and folders you want to audit.
- **Users** are the total number of users accessing those audited files in the last 30 days.

If you exceed the number of servers or users allowed by your subscription, FileAudit stops auditing events until you raise your limits. To increase your limits or discuss your subscription, [contact us](https://www.isdecisions.com/en/contact).

## How does FileAudit count users?

FileAudit counts users by the number of distinct users who accessed the audited files over the last 30 days. It is a rolling 30-day window, not a cumulative total, so a user who stops accessing audited files drops out of the count after 30 days. 

These are the users you see in the report of access events in the last 30 days.

You can check your current usage against your limits directly in **Settings**, on the **License** tab, which shows your audited Windows users and servers against your subscription. See [Settings](/fileaudit/docs/reference/settings#license) for details on the License tab.

## I have an older version of FileAudit. Can I upgrade to the latest version for free?

A valid FileAudit subscription lets you upgrade to the latest version at no additional charge for as long as the subscription is active. If your subscription has expired, [contact us](https://www.isdecisions.com/en/contact) to renew it.

## I have received my FileAudit license serial. Where can I register it?

Register your serial in **Settings**, on the **License** tab. 

Click **Update license key**, paste your serial, and apply it.

## How do I add users or servers to my subscription?

If you need to add more users or more servers to your subscription, please contact your Account Manager or send us an email to [sales@isdecisions.com](mailto:sales@isdecisions.com). You will be charged the difference of your new subscription pack from your current one, with no change in your expiration date.

## What if I need licenses for multiple sites?

You can split your license into multiple keys when you need to run separate FileAudit instances, for example to audit servers on different networks. The Small, Medium, and Enterprise packs support this.

Each key draws from the server and user totals of your pack, and the combined keys cannot exceed those totals. For example, a Small pack with 3 servers and 500 users could be split into one key with 2 servers and 200 users and another with 1 server and 300 users. You choose how to divide them, as long as the totals are respected.

## How do I add the cloud option after I've purchased a subscription?
