Which databases are supported by WinReporter?

Microsoft Access 97 or higher, Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 or higher and Oracle. Microsoft Access 2000 and SQL Server 7 are the best database solutions to use with WinReporter. Oracle is not supported with the predefined reports.

I can't see any information on my Windows 9x computers in the database.

You need to install the Microsoft Remote Administration and Registry service on the scanned Windows 9x computers. This service is available on Microsoft Windows installation CDs. The installation procedure is explained here.

Where are error messages stored?

They are all stored in the Application event log (source WInReporter) of the Windows NT system running the scanner.

My workstations aren't scanned what's the problem?

The requirements in order to scan a computer are:

1- The registry of the computer must be accessible remotely from your administration console
2- The administrative shares must be accessible from your administration console

If that's not the case, check the following points:
1- Have you the administrative rights on the computer to scan?
2- Is the Server service running on the computer to scan?
3- Is the Remote Registry Service running on the computer to scan?
4- Are the administrative shares (\\computername\admin$, C$, D$, ...) enabled?
5- Can you resolve the name of the computer with a ping? (ping ComputerName)

I have the following error message when the scan begin: "Unable to connect to the database". What's the problem?

Check if the MDAC 2.6 was already installed on your computer. In that case the WinReporter installer don't install the included MDAC 2.5 and the problem is that the Jet 4 database engine needed for the default MS Access database is not included in the MDAC 2.6. So you need to install it at a part. You can download it here.

I want to display a report but the display button is always grayed and I don't see my snapshots in the reporter. What's the problem?

You just need to reinstall the latest MDAC in order to fix the problem.

Can WinReporter scan Windows XP SP2 workstations?

Yes, WinReporter can scan Windows XP SP 2 workstations. You just need to follow the instructions listed in the document XP SP2 firewall settings for WinReporter in order to deploy the firewall settings allowing WinReporter to scan these computers.

I have an access denied on the target computers althought all requirements are validated. My computers are protected by McAfee VirusScan 8.5.

If you try to remotly access to an admin share on a target workstation using the domain administrator account, you have an error message "access denied" too. This error happens althought all ntfs rights are correctly set on the target folder and share configuration. An option in McAfee VirusScan 8.5 permits to protect the admin shares from write actions. With this option, the admin share (Admin$, C$, D$...) are like in "read only". You need to disable this option on the target computers to scan them with WinReporter.
